Technical & Installation Information

Installation instructions

All of our Braille signs come with high-quality double-sided tape for easy installation. For outdoor or textured surfaces, we strongly recommend using clear silicone adhesive in addition to the provided double-sided tape.

Placement of Braille and Tactile Signs

Signs that include symbols, numbers, and letters must be designed and installed according to the following guidelines:

  • Signs should be positioned no lower than 1200mm and no higher than 1600mm from the floor or ground surface.
  • For signs with a single line of characters, the tactile character line must be placed between 1250mm and 1350mm above the floor or ground surface.
  • Signs indicating rooms with features or facilities specified in D3.6 must be installed:
    • On the wall to the latch side of the door, with the leading edge of the sign positioned between 50mm and 300mm from the architrave.
    • If there is insufficient space on the latch side, a sign may be placed on the non-latch side of the door.
    • If neither option is feasible, the sign may be affixed directly to the door.
  • Signs that indicate paths of travel should be placed directly ahead in the direction of travel. If one wall continues in that direction and the other forms a corner, the sign must be placed on the continuing wall.

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) outlines the requirements and standards for Braille and tactile signage in section D3.6 of the code.

When signs are necessary, they must adhere to the following specifications:

  • Where applicable, raised tactile and/or Braille signage must be provided as follows:
    • Unisex accessible sanitary facilities should be marked with the international symbol of access, along with male and female symbols.
    • Signage for unisex accessible facilities must include the letters LH or RH to indicate a left-hand or right-hand transfer onto the WC pan. The minimum font size should be 20mm in a sans-serif typeface.

Luminance Contrast

Signs must be installed to meet the following luminance contrast standards:

  • The sign must have a luminance contrast of at least 30% with the surface it is mounted on.
  • This luminance contrast must be maintained under the specific lighting conditions where the sign will be installed.

Lighting

Signs must be adequately illuminated to ensure that the luminance contrast requirements are met at all times when the sign needs to be read.
